Abstract. The development of thermodestructive processes for processing heavy oil residues is relevant in the oil refining industry. In this paper, a study of the process of thermal cracking of tar in the presence of a regenerated spent aluminum-cobalt-molybdenum hydrotreating catalyst was carried out. The physicochemical properties of the regenerated catalyst sample are given. The cracking experiments were carried out using an autoclave at atmospheric pressure in the temperature range of 440-470 °C, the contact time was 30 minutes. The output of light fractions was accepted as the parameter determining the efficiency of the process. The most effective values of dispersion and catalyst content in the raw materials of the process have been consistently determined. The material balances of the investigated process are compared with the corresponding values of the material balances of thermal cracking in a wide temperature range. The analysis of the physico-chemical properties of the obtained narrow fractions is performed. The conclusion is made about the prospects of using the investigated process for processing heavy oil residues.
