Abstract: Asphaltenes are dissolved solid components of crude oil and although they play an important role in the petroleum industry, their significance has only recently been understood. Asphaltenes contribute to a wide range of oil field problems such as reservoir isolation, gum and heavy oil formation, and fluid flow in pipelines. Asphaltenes negatively impact the economic value of crude oil. As the asphaltene content increases from 0% to 40%, the viscosity and density of the oil increases dramatically and its color changes from clear to dark brown. With sufficient asphaltenes, hydrocarbons can have rheological properties similar to coal. In this paper, we review the main applications of asphaltenes and demonstrate methods for their isolation and synthetic approaches.
