Overview of European fuel quality development

The introduction of cleaner transportation fuels is a step-by-step process which has started in the European Union (EU), the United States and Japan in late 1970s. Only recently it has been followed by other countries and regions, where the European improvements of vehicle emissions and fuel quality are often taken as an example. This article takes the reader through four decades of development from the initial improvement of air quality via reduction of main pollutants through the advancement of more sophisticated vehicle technology and concurrent improvement of fuel quality, to the latest interest in GHG reduction and sustainability of transport.

Effects of hydrocarbon fraction composition and alcohol quality on antiknock value of E85 ethanol fuel

This article discusses the problem of E85 fuel production and usage. The influences of hydrocarbon fraction characteristics and composition and of alcohol quality on antiknock value of the bioethanol fuel produced are investigated. It was found that at concentrations of alcohol from 85% and higher the octane number of fuel is determinated by alcohol antiknock value and is independent of composition and structure of hydrocarbon fraction. Presence of water in alcohol improve octane number of E85 fuel. The possibility to obtain bioethanol fuels from low-octane fractious and ethanol without contaminant removal and dehydration (of alcohol) is established.

Ultra-deep hydrodesulphurization of straight-run diesel fractions

Compounding straight-run gas oils (SRGO) of 240-360°C and 200-300°C cuts and thereby changing fractional composition of feed makes possible to attain its ultra-deep hydrodesulphurization at a traditional hydrotreatment unit, working with low pressure. Middle-cut fraction of Urals oil has been treated at a trial unit with an irrigated layer of the catalyst under following conditions: temperature at reactor entry 320-360°C; volume feed rate (LHSV) 0,5-2 hr–1, general pressure in reactor 3,5 MPa, hydrogen/feed ratio 250 nm3/m3. A Co-Mo-Catalyst KF-757 of a Stars group being manufactured by Akzo Nobel.

Research of six middle-cut distillates showed that their ultra-deep hydrodesulphurization is presented by a rate equation of 1,5-order with an activation energy of 20,9-24,0 kcal/mole. If activation energy considered to be 23 kcal/mole for all defined kinds of feeds, the k0 constant of the Arrhenius equation can be calculated by power dependence upon the content of the 340°C+ fraction in the feedstock.

Practical and theoretical bases of coke yield decrease below the cokeability of vacuum residue with help of deasphalting and visbreaking processes

Studying the thermocarbonization of residual products of oil refining by a method of optical microscopy

The optical microscopy method investigates structure of petroleum feedstock thermocarbonization products with high aromaticity of styrene-indene tar formed as a result of polymerisation of heavy pyrolysis tar with subsequent topping of the polymerizate, and isotropic pyrolysis pitch from asphalt-free oil of heavy pyrolysis tar distillation residue. Influence of heat treatment duration at 440°С uponthe ability of styrene-indene tar and isotropic pyrolysis pitch, which are similar in group composition and mesophase formation ability, to form mesophase is being studied.

Determination of heavy fractions in crude oil and oil refinery products by chromatographic method

For definition of the maintenance of heavy fractions in oils and mineral oils it is offered to use chromatographic method of the simulated distillation. The method allows to define with enough fine precision mix character of oil and mineral oil.
